  • The Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI), which is based on the amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry, fell 0.1 percent in April from March, falling after reaching an all-time high in March. The April 2018 index level (134.3) was 41.7 percent above the April 2009 low during the most recent recession.

  • Freight between the U.S. and other North American countries (Canada and Mexico) in March 2018: Most-used mode: Truck moved $66.5 billion of freight, up 4.1 percent compared to March 2017  Second mode: Rail moved $16.1 billion of freight, up 1.9 percent compared to March 2017 
  • U.S. scheduled passenger airlines employed 2.8 percent more workers in March 2018 than in March 2017: The highest monthly full-time equivalent (FTE) employment total (434,243 FTEs) since December 2004 (436,909 FTEs). The 53rd consecutive month that U.S. scheduled passenger airline FTEs exceeded the same month of the previous year.
  • U.S. airlines’ February systemwide (domestic and international) scheduled service passenger enplanements rose 1.4 percent from January, rising to 72.8 million to reach a new all-time seasonally-adjusted high.
